Oral History WA is committed to ensuring oral history interviews are conducted to a high standard, in terms of ethics, protocols and (where possible) audio quality. To support this aim, we are offering an introductory workshop to individuals and groups who are new to the practice and methods of doing an oral history interview. Sunday 24 March 2024.
Time: 10:15 for 10:30 start am to 3:30pm
Cost: $80 non-members, $50 members
Venue: Northwest room, State Library of WA
At the end of this workshop, you will have a good understanding of:
- What is Oral History?
- Qualities of a good interviewer
- The basics of planning an Oral History interview
- Interview ethics.
In addition, you will have an opportunity to get hands-on practice of interviewing and using recording equipment.
The workshop will be led by experienced oral historians, including OHWA committee members Susan Hall and Dr Alison Atkinson-Phillips. We will also hear from Franco Smargiassi, a community historian and documentary maker who is passionate about using oral history to understand and share Australia’s migrant histories.

- Bring your mobile phones or handheld recorders if you have them for recording practice (some will be available to use on the day).
